Reference Material There are many books, publications, organizations and qualified persons who can give you additional information. Some of our suggestions are as follows: 1. Understanding Your Dog by Michael W. Fox, Phantom Books 2. How to Have a Healthier Dog by Wendal O. Belfield, DVM and Martin Zuchor, Signet Books 3. Local Kennels Clubs When your pup is six to 9 months old, plan on attending an obedience class somewhere near you. For about 10 weeks and a reasonable fee, you can attend class with your dog once or twice a week and work on the material learned, daily for a few minutes several times during the day. Your dog will learn obedience, regardless of environmental distractions such as other pets, handlers, children calling them etc. and learn that it is expected to remain obedient regardless of those distractions. The more you work with your pup the more you will understand, anticipate and trust him/her, knowing that he has learned, limitations and areas requiring refreshing from time to time. You will learn the proper commands, consistency and enjoy the camaraderie of like minded individuals training their dogs. Networking with others in similar circumstances can be useful for the sharing of both problems and solutions. 4. The Canadian Kennel Club, 89 Skyway Ave Suite 100, Etobicoke, Ontario, M9W 6R4 5 Ralston Purina Canada Inc. 101 Queensway West, 4th Floor, Mississaauga Ontario L5B 2P4 6. Dog Owners Home Veterinary Handbook by D. G. Carlson, DVM and J.M. Griffin M.D., Howell Bookhouse. 7. Dogs In Canada Magazine-monthly publication of the CKC 8. Local Retriever Clubs- can help you get in touch with contacts in your area for training for Field, Obedience or Show, or just socializing at club sponsored events and watching the dogs do what they were bred for.
