This page is still under construction but the best advice I can give you is to obtain the best reference material you can find for your carving. Mounted birds, study skins, study bills and many good photographs of each individual species are useful. If you can do it (you will need a special license) studying live birds through having your own live ducks to study shapes, colors and even posture and mechanical structure is a very worthwhile venture.

I will be adding more pages to this area as the site develops and I receive some input on what people would like to see or hear about but in the meantime I recommend the following books for the beginner looking to create a good working decoy or a decorative reproduction of a live duck.

The Art of the Wooden Bird by Richard Le Master

Waterfowl Identification Method by Richard Le Master

Carving Waterfowl by James Sprankle

Painting Waterfowl by James Sprankle

Waterfowl Patterns by Pat Godin

There are also on-line discussion forums for carvers of every level located at:

http://www.decoycarvingforum.com

http://www.forum.wildfowlart.com

That should give you lots of reference material, to get you started,

and keep carving.

Best wishes,
